How I overcame my anxiety with Exercise

Anxiety comes from suppressed fear and stress. It is triggered by our nervous system. When we feel like we are about to have an anxiety attack our body goes into fight or flight mode where hormones send signals for changes to happen throughout the body such as:

  • Heart beating at a very rapid rate

  • Parts of your body tense up

  • Chest tightness

  • Heavy breathing

  • Feeling dizzy

  • Similar symptoms of a heart attack

These above changes have happened to me at some point when I was experiencing anxiety attacks. Let me tell you they are awful. You feel like you’re having a heart attack. I wasn’t able to function properly throughout the day and I was suffering in silence for over 3 years. It affected my work, friendships and relationships. Anxiety is debilitating. My first attack had me rush to the hospital to only be told I was having an anxiety attack. I remember just looking at the doctor like he was crazy as I could feel my heart pumping out of my chest so bad that chest pains were unbearable. According to the doctor I was fine and he sent me home. That’s when it dawned on me, I had a mental condition that I didn’t know what the root cause of it was. So, over the first couple of weeks it consumed my thoughts, my sleep and I didn’t want to be around anyone. I then started to fall into depression and by then I decided to consult my doctor and tell him what I’ve experiencing. He recommended I see a therapist and talk through my problems rather than prescribe me pills which seem to mask the issue not fix it. As I worked with the therapist to deal with some underlying issues I was having at that current time in my life I still found it hard to release my frustration or stress and I was accumulating whilst running my business at the time. I knew my diet and current lifestyle had to change in order for me to regain my self-confidence and live a more fulfilled life. I won’t lie I started off working out twice a day an hour each time and it was hard. (I don’t know how I was doing it but I was so determine to push through the pain and keep going) I pushed through so hard I would sometimes cry from how much pain I was in from muscle and joint fatigue but I didn’t care I wanted to be a size 10 so bad I didn’t give up even though my body was screaming PLEASE STOPPPP!!! (working out twice a day was crazy and I longer train like this!) What I did notice over time that I was able to control my anxiety attacks a lot easier. They become less frequent and I started to understand what my trigger factors to my anxiety was which gave me a better understanding on how much stress, anger and frustration my body could actually handle. My moods got better dealing with stress and pressure became a breeze as exercise was my outlet and I longer suppress my emotions. Engaging in exercise and eating clean definitely made a huge difference to my wellbeing.
